Decarcerate PA

Decarcerate PA is a statewide coaliton of organizations focused on ending mass incarceration. They are guided by a three-point plan: 1. No new prisons in PA, 2. Reduce the number of people in prison, 3. Community reinvestment. They advocate for "changes in policing, sentencing and legislation to reduce the prison population."

Decarcerate is currently active in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Reading, Allentown, and Harrisburg.

Kansans United for Youth Justice

Kansans United for Youth Justice is a organization advocating for juvenile justice reforms. They work to move from prison sentences and out-of-home placements for juveniles to a community-based model of justice. The group has put out a report on the "Principles of Juvenile Justice" and lobbies state leadership for reforms.

Slaves of the State: Black Incarceration from the Chain Gang to the Penitentiary

Dennis Childs argues that the incarceration of black people and other historically repressed groups in chain gangs, peon camps, prison plantations, and penitentiaries represents a ghostly perpetuation of chattel slavery. He exposes how the Thirteenth Amendment’s exception clause—allowing for enslavement as “punishment for a crime”—has inaugurated forms of racial capitalist misogynist incarceration that serve as haunting returns of conditions Africans endured in the barracoons and slave ship holds of the Middle Passage, on plantations, and in chattel slavery.

Article describes how prisons exploit incarcerated people as a source of labor:  low wages paid to incarcerated worker, high profits to private prison firms, kickbacks to state from prison contractors, lobbying by for-profit prison firms, price-gouging of incarcerated people at the commissary (company store), debt peonage, etc.

The Promise of Justice Initiative

"The Promise of Justice Initiative seeks to reform Louisiana’s criminal justice system and abolish the death penalty." The work is focused on "ending the death penalty, fixing inhumane conditions of confinement, exposing prosecutorial and judicial misconduct, eliminating poor representation of criminal defendants, and ending racial discrimination in the criminal justice system."
