Citizens for Prison Reform

Citizens for Prison Reform is a Michigan-focused, family-run organization. They do letter writing campaigns, legislative education days, and are focused on "reforming Michigan's prisons, and offering support and necessary information to loved ones who have someone who is  incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections."

The AFSC offices in Michigan are involved with this program.

Monthly meetings are held in Lansing, MI. See their website for more information.

Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition

"Founded in 1999, the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition (CCJRC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate the overuse of the criminal justice system and advance community health and safety." The Coalition is comprised of "people convicted of crime, survivors of crime, and the families and allies of both." CCJRC does work to "advocate and organize for public safety strategies that are more holistic, effective and just."

Council on Crime and Justice

The Council on Crime and Justice in a Minneapolis, MN-based criminal and social justice organization . From the website: "We seek a criminal justice system that is equitable and just, treats people with compassion and dignity, and allows for second chances, creating a safe and thriving community. We ground our work in direct advocacy, inform it with rigorous research and evaluation, power it with legal expertise, and implement it by bringing the community together."

Critical Resistance

Critical Resistance is a national prison abolition organization. They seek "to end Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe." Critical Resistance publishes a quarterly bilingual journal, The Abolitionist, "which is written mostly by prisoners, former prisoners, and community advocates." The Abolitionist can be found at https://abolitionistpaper.wordpress.com/

Decarcerate PA

Decarcerate PA is a statewide coaliton of organizations focused on ending mass incarceration. They are guided by a three-point plan: 1. No new prisons in PA, 2. Reduce the number of people in prison, 3. Community reinvestment. They advocate for "changes in policing, sentencing and legislation to reduce the prison population."

Decarcerate is currently active in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Reading, Allentown, and Harrisburg.

Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (EBC)

Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (EBC) is an organization focused on building the power of black, brown, and poor communities. The unequal, racially biased system of mass incarceration within the US inhbits this power-building, and so the EBC is focused on advocacy and direct action. The Center grounds its work in Truth and Reinvestment processes.
